GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

October 16, 1992

Only 13 candidates respond to Stonewall questionnaire

Stonewall-Cleveland, a gay and lesbian political organization, mailed a questionnaire to each of the candidates in the upcoming election, asking the candidate's position on 12 issues of concern to the lesbian-gay community.

With the exception of the judicial candidates, every candidate for county, state, or national office representing Ohio was sent a questionnaire. Out of a total of 65 candidates, only 13 returned a completed survey. According to Stonewall vice president Keith Sutton, follow-up by telephone to encourage candidates to respond was hindered by a lack of volunteers.

porter of lesbians and gays since he first took office. Even if he doesn't come to Pride at least he sends letters every year declining. It really doesn't matter who was running against Representative Stokes, you can't find a better friend to our community then he.

Rothschild, the mayor of University Heights, is another unknown who declined to respond to a Ms. survey on gay rights, and did not return the Stonewall questionnaire.

Both Gudenas and Henley did return the Stonewall questionnaire but their answers were mixed and not impressive at all.

U.S. House, 13th District

★Sherrod Brown (D) Margaret Muller (R)

Again, there is a clear-cut choice for the preferred candidate in this race. Margaret Muller is anti-choice and homophobic.

Sherrod Brown is the clear endorsement in this race but we are disappointed in Brown and his staff. After receiving $2,500 from the Human Rights Campaign Fund, Brown canceled a planned press conference because he was afraid of the reaction of Muller and the problems she might give him. We did get to talk to his campaign manager, but were disappointed that Brown had no position on issues that are important to us, which makes us wonder how in the heck he got so much money from HRCF? He is clearly the better choice, but we think he has a lot to learn.

U.S. House, 19th District ★Eric Fingerhut (D) Robert A. Gardner (R)

Eric Fingerhut is a champion of the people. All people. He believes in human rights and stands behind that belief even if it becomes unpopular, as a stand for lesbian and gay rights often does. He has taken and continues to take flak for his support of our community, yet he continues to support us and we support him. Last month, Fingerhut's biggest fundraiser was held at the home of Greg Levine and Howard Epstein. The private party raised over $9,500 for the candidate that stands behind his convictions. The lesbian and gay community needs to continue to support this man. If every politician were like him, civil rights for all would be common and the world could concentrate on important issues.

Fingerhut's opponent replied to a question on lesbian and gay adoption "[I don't] think it would be a right to subject a child to that environment." It just speaks for itself, doesn't it?

Ohio Senate, 22nd District ★Gillian Flynn (D) Grace Drake (R)

Anewcomer to the political scene, Gillian Flynn is an outspoken supporter of lesbian and gay issues, abortion rights and other women's issues. She not only returned Stonewall's survey but she answered in the affirmative for all the questions. Not only should you vote for Flynn, you should Continued on next page
